Growing Like a Read is the early literacy initiative of PLS and supports development of the six pre-reading skills in children from birth to age 5: Phonological Awareness, Letter Knowledge, Narrative Skills, Vocabulary, Print Awareness, and Print Motivation.
Early literacy development begins in the first three years of life through reading, singing, talking and playing. The literacy skills that are developed in these early years help support the language skills needed for overall learning for the rest of a child’s life. Research from the American Pediatrics Association confirms that children who are introduced to reading early in life tend to read earlier and excel in school.
We invite you to contact your PLS library and let us know you would like to participate in Growing Like a Read!
Staff will provide to each interested family a tote bag to carry library books. Grow your child's pre-reading skills in 20 minutes throughout the day with the resources in this bag:
A stand-up book of rhymes, songs, finger plays, and activities
A book to share together and add to your home library
A link to a sing-along playlist
Additional resources to help your child get school-ready
